Hamburgs derzeit erfolgreichster Musikproduzent hält sich gern im Hintergrund, spricht in keine Kamera und hat für Interviews selten Zeit: David Jost (37), Produzent, Songwriter und Manager von "Tokio Hotel", ist ein Workaholic. Seit sieben Jahren ist er der Mann hinter der längst auch international mega-erfolgreichen Band. Zusammen mit Bill Kaulitz schrieb er alle großen "Tokio Hotel"-Hits. Aktuell steht sein mit Robin Grubert komponierter Titel "I Like", gesungen von US-Star Keri Hilson, auf Platz 1 der Charts. Mit der MOPO sprach Jost jetzt über seinen Job und sein Leben zwischen Hollywood und Hamburg.
MOPO: Was dachtest du, als du vor sieben Jahren die Jungs von "Tokio Hotel" trafst?
Jost: Zu dem Zeitpunkt hatte ich alles andere vor, als mich ausschließlich einer Band zu widmen. Aber nachdem ich die Band zusammen mit meinen Produktionspartnern gehört und gesehen hatte, war ich komplett paralysiert. Das emotionale Potenzial von Bill, er war damals 13, war unglaublich. Schon als kleiner Junge war er eine Ausnahmeerscheinung, trug eine große Melancholie, aber auch großen Kampfeswillen in sich. Wir haben seine Songideen dann zusammen im Studio ausgearbeitet. Viele haben damals gesagt, das könne nicht funktionieren, und auch der Band-Name ,Tokio Hotel` sei viel zu seltsam. Ich hab' überall meine Hand dafür ins Feuer gelegt, dass die Band auf Nummer 1 einsteigt, wenn dass nicht aufgegangen wäre, hätte ich ziemlich dumm ausgesehen.
MOPO: Was ist an "Tokio Hotel" so besonders?
Jost: Das Starpotenzial dieser Band ist unglaublich groß, und einen Frontmann wie Bill findet man, wenn überhaupt, nur alle paar Jahrzehnte. Die Jungs sind zusätzlich auch noch clever und an allen Entscheidungen, die die Band angeht, beteiligt. In den letzten Jahren haben sie parallel zu ihrer Karriere auf der Bühne automatisch eine komplette Musikbusiness-Ausbildung bekommen. Vor allem Tom hat sich da reingearbeitet. Wenn der irgendwann mal keine Lust mehr hat, auf der Bühne zu stehen, kann der auch hinter den Kulissen erfolgreich werden.

Jost: At the time, I didn't even want to put all my devotion into one Band. But after I saw and heard them with my Partners, I was paralyzed. This emotional potential of Bill, he was 13 back then, was incredible. Even as a young boy he had an exceptional appearance, carried a great sadness, but also a great fighting spirit in him. We then worked on his Song-ideas together at the Studio. A lot of people said to us that it wouldn't work, and that the Band-Name "Tokio Hotel" is too strange. I told all of them that I believed in the Band, and that they would enter on #1 on the Charts - if this wouldn't have happened, I would have looked pretty stupid.
MOPO: What's so special about "Tokio Hotel"?
Jost: The star-potential of this Band is incredibly large, and you can find a Frontman like Bill only every few decades. In addition the Boys are clever, and involved in all the decisions when it comes to the Band. In the last years they automatically got a complete Music Business education, parallel to their career on stage. Especially Tom has really worked himself into that a lot. If he - someday - gets sick of standing on stage, then he can get successful by working behind the scenes.[...]
